about the film: GIRLHOOD

 

before PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, there was GIRLHOOD.

this is the third film from writer-director céline sciamma. set in the projects of paris, GIRLHOOD makes palpable the liberating potential of girl power – and shows us the social pressures that aim to extinguish it.

marieme/vic, is played by karidja touré who won most promising actress at the 2015 césar awards. she’s 16, failing school and left mostly abandoned at home. she is approached by members of a girl gang on her block to join them on a trip into the city centre.

sciamma presents us with a coming of age story that develops ideas of belonging, sisterhood and what it means to be a teenager. she brings the face of black youth to the forefront of international cinema and invites the audience to witness the bond these girls share.

this film is for those who: love coming of age cinema, are fans of sciamma’s work (ahead of her latest film PETITE MAMAN out at the end of the year), may have missed it on its first release, and for anyone wanting to revisit this electrifying portrait on the big screen.
